Prepare for Your Tear Trough Dermal Filler Treatment Using these Tips

Age affects our bodies in many different ways, with the skin around our eyes and cheeks being one of the areas that are affected the most.

Fortunately, visible signs of ageing such as tear troughs can easily be treated with dermal fillers.

If you’ve decided that this is the right treatment for you, there are a few things that you can do to prepare for your treatment and minimise any side effects.

Preparing for Your Tear Trough Treatment

Here are a few tips that will help reduce bruising and swelling:

  • Stay away from any medications or supplements that would thin your blood for at least 2 days before your treatment. Thin blood increases your risk of bruising so stay away from products that contain aspirin or supplements such as Vitamin E
  • Find out from your doctor whether they would be happy for you to take arnica tablets for 5 days prior to your treatment to reduce bruising and swelling
  • Prepare your skin by applying a hot compress such as a warm face cloth every 2 hours on the day of your treatment

Always discuss any pre-treatment steps that you will be taking with your doctor prior to your treatment in a top clinic such as epiclinic®.

Recovering from Your Tear Trough Treatment

Directly after your treatment, you might experience some mild swelling, redness, tenderness and in some cases, itching too. These side effects are completely normal and will subside within a few days. If your side effects continue for longer than a few days, it’s important to get in touch with your doctor as soon as possible.

Patients will need to wait for any swelling to subside before they will be able to enjoy the full results of their treatment. It’s also recommended that you refrain from touching the treated area for 6 hours after your appointment. Once 6 hours have passed, you can gently wash your face with soap and water and light makeup can be applied if need be.

It’s very important that you don’t expose the treated area to extreme temperatures until the swelling and redness have completely subsided.

If you have a history of cold sores, be aware that the needle punctures could cause more cold sores so you may want to have medication on hand. If you will be using medications during your recovery, note that some of them could intensify bruising and bleeding.

Longevity of Your Tear Trough Treatment Results

While you will be able to enjoy the results of your dermal filler treatment for several months, your results won’t be permanent. If you are happy with the results, you can choose to schedule top-up treatments that will allow you to maintain your new appearance.

Most patients will only need a follow-up treatment about 6 – 8 months after their first treatment but this will vary. In some cases, you may also require a second treatment before your desired result can be achieved – your doctor will be able to advise you on this.
